Privacy Policy
1. Who We Are
Berg ("we", "us", "our") is a mobile application that helps friend groups form around shared interests, create real-world plans ("motives"), and capture shared memories. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, store, and share information when you use the Berg mobile app or visit berg.app (collectively, the "Service").
For questions about this policy, contact us at support@berg.app.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide
- Account information: Your name, email address, and profile photo when you create an account.
- Profile details: Username and any optional bio or availability status you choose to set.
- Motive content: When you create a plan ("motive"), we collect the title, description, scheduled date and time, and any location details (venue name and address) you enter.
- Messages: Chat messages you send within motive group chats. Messages are stored to enable real-time and offline messaging.
- Memory photos: Photos you voluntarily upload to document a completed motive, along with vibe tags and ratings you choose to add.
- Circle participation: The interest-based groups ("circles") you join or create.
2.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Device information: Device type, operating system version, and app version, collected to support crash reporting and compatibility.
- Push notification token: A device-specific token used exclusively to deliver push notifications from Berg to your device.
- App usage data: Screens viewed, features used, and in-app actions (e.g., joining a motive, sending a message), collected in aggregate for product analytics. This data is linked to an anonymous identifier, not your name.
- Error and crash reports: When the app crashes or encounters an error, we collect technical information about the error, including stack traces and the app state at the time of the crash. This may include your anonymised user identifier to help us reproduce and fix the issue.
2.3 Location Information
Berg accesses your device location only when you actively use the place-search feature while creating a motive. We use your location to search for nearby venues via the Google Places API. We do not store your precise GPS coordinates on our servers. Location access is not required to use Berg.
2.4 Information from Third-Party Sign-In
If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email address from those providers. We do not receive your passwords or payment information from these providers.
3. How We Use Your Information
- To create and maintain your Berg account.
- To deliver the core features of the app: circles, motives, chats, and memories.
- To send you push notifications about motive updates, messages, and activity in your circles.
- To send transactional emails (e.g., magic-link sign-in, account-related alerts).
- To analyse how the app is used in aggregate so we can improve it.
- To detect, investigate, and fix bugs and crashes.
- To prevent abuse, enforce our Terms of Service, and protect our users.
We do not use your personal information for advertising. We do not build advertising profiles. We do not sell your data.
4. How We Share Your Information
4.1 With Other Users
Your name, profile photo, and username are visible to other Berg users when you interact in circles, motives, or chats. Photos you upload to a motive's memory gallery are visible to all confirmed attendees of that motive.
4.2 With Service Providers
We share data with the following third-party processors to operate the Service. Each is bound by data processing agreements and uses your information only as instructed:
- Supabase — database and file storage (AWS us-west-2, United States). Stores your account data, messages, motive data, and uploaded photos.
- PostHog — product analytics (EU/US). Receives anonymised usage events to help us understand how features are used.
- Sentry — error monitoring (United States). Receives crash reports and error logs, which may include your anonymised user ID and app state at the time of an error.
- Resend — transactional email delivery (United States). Receives your email address to deliver sign-in links and account emails.
- Google Places API — location search (United States). Receives your device location temporarily when you search for venues. Data is not stored by us beyond the duration of the search.
- Expo / Expo Application Services — push notification infrastructure (United States). Receives your device push token to deliver notifications.
4.3 Legal Requirements
We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or governmental authority, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect the safety of any person, investigate fraud, or respond to a government request.
4.4 Business Transfers
If Berg is acquired, merged, or its assets are transferred, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your personal data is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
5. Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it by law. Uploaded photos are removed from storage. Chat messages in deleted accounts are anonymised (sender name replaced with "Deleted User").
6. Your Rights and Choices
- Access: You can view your profile information within the app at any time.
- Correction: You can update your name, profile photo, and other profile details in the app.
- Deletion: You can request deletion of your account and all associated personal data by emailing support@berg.app. We will process your request within 30 days.

If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or California, you may have additional rights under applicable data protection laws. Contact us to exercise any of these rights.
7. Data Security
We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted transmission (HTTPS/TLS), encrypted storage, and access controls to protect your information. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. We encourage you to use a strong, unique password and to keep your device secure.
8. Children's Privacy
Berg is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, contact us at support@berg.app.
9. International Data Transfers

If you access Berg from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, which may have data protection laws that differ from those in your country. By using Berg, you consent to this transfer.
10. Third-Party Links and Services
Berg may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services you use.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app or by email. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Your continued use of Berg after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
